What is Acupuncture?

Understanding the Healing Power of Energy and Balance

A Modern Take on an Ancient Healing Art

Acupuncture is part of a comprehensive medical system known as Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM. Like conventional medicine, TCM—including acupuncture—can address a wide range of chronic and acute health conditions.

Our bodies are like intelligent electrical systems, with energy flowing through us that allows us to live, move, and be who we are. This energy—what I call Electriciqi—is a modern way of understanding the traditional Chinese concept of Qi(pronounced “chee”). It flows from our nervous system and powers everything from our heartbeat to our overall function and well-being.

If you know someone with a pacemaker, you’ve seen how essential electricity is to life. We truly are electric beings!

How can the insertion of tiny, sterile needles at specific points on the body often achieve what conventional medicine cannot?

When acupuncture is performed correctly, two key physiological changes occur in the body:

1. The Release of Nitric Oxide
Nitric oxide is a gas that dilates blood vessels—arteries, veins, and capillaries—allowing for increased circulation of nutrient-rich, healing blood to organs, tissues, muscles, and bones. Our vitality is carried in our blood. When blood flow is weak, we become weak and symptomatic. When it flows freely and fully, we are strong, healthy, and symptom-free. In this way, proper blood circulation—something acupuncture helps promote—is foundational to good health.

2. Regulation of the Limbic System
Acupuncture also has a profound impact on the brain, particularly the limbic system, which is responsible for pain regulation. In a 2015 study at Exeter University in England, researchers used MRI imaging to observe the brain in real time during acupuncture. They witnessed the limbic system “light up” as it actively reduced the patient’s pain response. This research provides scientific validation of acupuncture’s ability to modulate pain through direct interaction with the brain.

In short, acupuncture’s ability to enhance blood flow through the release of nitric oxide and to regulate pain via the limbic system explains its powerful and wide-ranging benefits in supporting and restoring health.

How Energy Flows in the Body
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Qi flows through 12 main pathways (called meridians) that run from your head to your toes. Each pathway is connected to a specific internal organ—like the Liver, Heart, Stomach, or Kidneys.
When this energy flows freely, your body functions smoothly and stays in balance. But over time, stress, trauma, emotional strain, or environmental factors can cause blockages, much like plaque in a blood vessel. These disruptions in energy can lead to pain, dysfunction, and illness.

Examples of Energy Blockages
  • A Kidney meridian blockage may cause:
Back pain, knee issues, hearing problems, or reproductive challenges.
  • A Stomach/Spleen meridian blockage may lead to:
Fatigue, digestive issues, depression, or weakened immunity.

Each meridian affects different systems, and symptoms can vary depending on where the imbalance is.

How Acupuncture Helps
As an acupuncturist, my job is to identify where these energy blockages are occurring and gently clear them. I use hair-thin, sterile acupuncture needles—which act like tiny electrical conductors—to restore the flow of Electriciqi throughout the body.

By opening these pathways, acupuncture supports your body’s natural healing response, reduces pain, and encourages lasting wellness.

What to Expect During Treatment

Acupuncture is a gentle and safe therapy. Many people find treatments to be deeply relaxing and even meditative. Each session is tailored to your individual needs—whether you're managing chronic pain, stress, hormonal imbalances, or simply looking to feel more balanced and energized.

I welcome questions and take the time to explain what’s happening along the way—so you always feel informed, comfortable, and supported.
